WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is a holistic healing system of medicine, which has been practised in China and other countries for thousands of years.  Acupuncture is often described as a means of pain relief: it is in fact used to treat a wide range of illnesses.  It recognises and utilises the potential of the human body to repair and rebalance itself.  It provides individual healing by analysing information about your medical history and that of your family, diet, rhythm and strength of your pulse, colour and coating of the tongue, thus giving a wider pattern of disharmony, rather than isolated treatment of specific symptoms.

Acupuncture is now practised worldwide as knowledge of it’s benefits continue to increase.  Traditional Chinese Medicine follows the concept of the body’s motivating energy known as  Qi.  Qi flows smoothly around the body, but can be disrupted by a number of factors causing illness.  Acupuncture corrects the flow of Qi, stimulating the recovery of a persons equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects by inserting fine needles into specific points in the body.

IS IT SAFE?

All needles are pre-packed, sterilised and used only once before being disposed of safely.

All members of the British Acupuncture Council observe a Code of Practice, which lays down stringent standards of hygiene and sterilisation for needles or other equipment. Procedures have been approved by the Department of Health.

HOW DOES IT FEEL?

Most peoples experience of needles is those of injections and blood tests: Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance as the needles are much finer and are solid rather than hollow. It is hardly felt when the needle is inserted, while a little after the sensation is often described as a tingling sensation.  Needles are inserted for a time depending on the patients situation.  Patients commonly experience heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation.
